About Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach is on the other side of the Maharees peninsula from the rest of Brandon Bay's breaks: it faces east into Tralee Bay, sheltered from the Atlantic by the peninsula itself. On an ordinary day it's flat and better known for kitesurfing and swimming.

It earns its place on this site for the handful of days a year when a massive winter NW swell wraps around the tip of the Maharees and into Tralee Bay. When everything on the west shore is closing out, this is where it can be a surprise. A westerly wind is offshore here — the opposite of the rest of the bay.

Hazards & Notes

  • Usually flat — only breaks on the biggest winter swells
  • Kitesurfers and swimmers share the beach in summer
  • Cold water year-round
