Maharees Surf Forecast (Castlegregory)
About Maharees
Maharees is the narrow sandy tombolo connecting the Maharee islands to the mainland at Castlegregory, on the north side of the Dingle peninsula. The peninsula has water on both sides - Tralee Bay to the south, the open Atlantic to the north - so it offers multiple exposures in a small area.
The north-facing beaches handle W to NW swells; the south-facing ones can pick up S swells. That makes Maharees one of the most adaptable spots in Kerry - if one side isn't working, the other probably is. Castlegregory village has surf schools, board hire and accommodation.
Hazards & Notes
- Strong tidal currents at the tip of the peninsula
- Watch the wind - it can be onshore one side, offshore the other
- Rips between sand bars on bigger swells
- Cold water year-round outside summer
