Crab Island Surf Forecast
About Crab Island
Crab Island is the small uninhabited island sitting offshore from Doolin harbour, north Clare. The wave is a fast, hollow right-hander breaking on the reef shelf off the island's south side. It's reliably visible from the harbour pier and from the cliffs on either side, which makes it one of the most photographed reef breaks in Ireland.
Access is by boat, jet-ski or kayak from Doolin pier - there is no paddle-in from shore. The wave needs a clean NW groundswell with a long period, and an E to SE offshore wind to hold its shape. Mid tide is best.
Crab Island sits in the same swell zone as Aileen's and Riley's; when the Atlantic delivers, the whole Clare reef coastline lights up at once.
Hazards & Notes
- Boat access only - currents in the channel are strong
- Reef is shallow and unforgiving on the inside
- Be aware of fishing boats and ferry traffic from Doolin
- Cold North Atlantic water year-round
