About Silver Strand (Malin Beg)
Silver Strand (An Trá Bhán) at Malin Beg is the horseshoe bay at the very end of the road west of Glencolmcille — a near-perfect crescent of sand enclosed by high cliffs, reached by 174 concrete steps down from the car park. It faces south, so it's sheltered from the prevailing westerlies; a W groundswell wraps around the headland and peels off into the bay as lefts and rights.
That shelter is what makes it reliable: it works year-round and holds a wave when the exposed Donegal beaches are blown out. Low tide is best, and it's rarely crowded. Neighbouring Malinmore is the more exposed option 4 km to the north-east.
Hazards & Notes
- 174 steps — a long carry back up with a board
- Rocks at both ends of the horseshoe
- Remote · self-sufficient surfing
